It was occupied by the British and American troops during the Revolutionary War. The Drayton sons were prominent in local affairs for many years, becoming soldiers as well as statesmen. The Drayton family seat traces back to Scotland to the 16th century. Thomas Drayton, a great-grandson of the founder, having no male heirs, left his estate to the sons of her daughter.
