Drayton Hall, thirteen miles from Charleston, is one of the most beautiful plantations located on the Ashley River about 15 miles northwest of Charleston, South Carolina, and directly across the Ashley River from North Charleston, west of the Ashley in the Low Country. When I visited there about fifteen years ago, the crooked limbs of live oak trees branching over the road, flowers, gardens, farmlands, horses, and other animals provided a welcoming sense of pleasure. The house is a large two-story brick home with a basement where servants lived and prepared meals. I could envision myself wearing a long dress and walking along the river’s edge in front of the large brick house with multiple fireplaces. The site depicts a “working” plantation with its tractors and plows and an on-site restaurant.
